“Ship Watch!” Book Launch

Who: Jonathan Barrett
When: Thursday, Jan. 11, 2024 at 5 p.m.
Where: Senior Citizens Learning Center
What: Enjoy cocktails, hors d’oeuvres, and remarks from the author of “Ship Watch!” Set around the renowned and historical Savannah homestead at the center of the drama, Ship Watch weaves together six intertwined relationships that extend from the gentrified city of Savannah and into the wealthy enclaves of Sea Island, Highlands, and Atlanta’s Buckhead.

The novel’s characters are drawn out of the loom by the family’s elegant but exceedingly formidable matriarch, Grand Martha, and form a multi-generational tapestry that includes the misfortunes of betrayal, divorce, and hurt – but in more and even better measure opportunities for redemption, rediscovery, and self-awareness – as well as the rarified gift of ‘second love.’ Combining encompassing settings with a solid sense of place, along with characters that are both believable and rather extraordinary, Ship Watch delivers a mesmerizing and ‘hard-to-put-down’ opportunity for fiction lovers

According to Mary Kay Andrews, NYT bestselling author of The Homewreckers and Hissy Fit, “Readers will clutch their pearls—and then devour this deliciously dishy, multi-generational peek into the manners and mores of the Savannah, Highlands, Sea Island, and Buckhead moneyed elite.”

Born and raised in Perry, GA, writer Johnathon Barrett spent years living in Savannah, and is currently Director of Development for the State Botanical Garden of Georgia. He is loved by so many locally and throughout the state and has also written these successful cookbooks: Cook & Celebrate, Rise & Shine, and Cook & Tell.

Healthy Savannah announces free vaccines for uninsured and underinsured

CDC-funded Bridge Access Program provides no-cost COVID-19 vaccines as 2023-24 Tripledemic Season Ramps Up

The COVID-19 pandemic may have ended, but the “tripledemic” of flu, COVID, and RSV (respiratory syncytial virus) that was pervasive last fall and winter is expected to return and be just as severe this year. Last flu season, there were 26 million illnesses, 290,000 hospitalizations, and 19,000 deaths reported across the U.S. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), hospitalizations from those diseases are expected to remain high again this year.

“We know vaccinations will play a key role in determining how difficult this season will be,” said Dr. Elsie Smalls, operations manager. “People are getting back to their normal routines but all of us need to remember that even an average respiratory season can be deadly for vulnerable populations, especially the elderly in our low-income communities, and those with chronic conditions.”

Healthy Savannah and the YMCA of Coastal Georgia are administrators of a five-year, $5.1 million Racial and Ethnic Approaches to Community Health (REACH) grant awarded by the CDC in September 2023. They want adults in Chatham County to know that free COVID-19 vaccines are now available to the uninsured and underinsured through the CDC’s Bridge Access Program.

Local providers offering the no-cost vaccines include the Coastal Health District’s Eisenhower Clinic, J. C. Lewis Primary Health Care and several CVS and Walgreens branches.

The Bridge Access Program is available through December 31, 2024. Visit vaccines.gov/ to find a provider in your zip code that offers COVID-19 vaccines at no cost through the initiative.
