“To be the best, you’ve got to beat the best.”
If the Calvary Day baseball team believes in the old mantra, the Cavs have their chance to become the best over the weekend in Rome, Georgia.
Calvary (27-6 overall record) plays in the Georgia High School Association (GHSA) State Baseball Championship Series on Friday, May 17 against reigning Class 3A state champion Harlem (32-1). The best-of-three series will be played at a minor league ballpark in Rome, Advent Health Stadium.
A doubleheader will be played Friday, beginning at 5pm. The second game starts 30 minutes after the first game concludes. The series could be decided (if necessary) on Saturday in a pivotal Game 3 scheduled for a noon first pitch.
They entered the playoffs ranked No. 3 in the Atlanta-Journal Constitution’s final regular season poll for Class 3A.
Harlem, widely considered a favorite since winning it all last season, has been No. 1 for a majority of the campaign this year. Harlem will be the home team for the first game and Calvary in the Friday nightcap. A coin toss would determine the Game 3 home team.
Wallace is 10-1 on the year with a 1.74 ERA and a nice ratio of 69 strikeouts to just 10 walks over 56.1 innings pitched. Vanderbilt commit Will Hampton (2-0, 0.64 ERA, 33 IP) is a closing candidate for the first game, and potentially a starting candidate for the second game. Hampton leads the club with a .450 batting average while Caden Arnold (.405) and Max Arnold (.406) make up a CDS trio each with 43+ hits to his credit.
The team departs from Calvary’s campus on Thursday morning at 8:30am before stopping in Macon for lunch (Carrabba’s) at 11:15am and arriving at their hotel in Rome (Holiday Inn Express & Suites) at 2:30pm. The Cavs will practice on Thursday evening at The Darlington School in Rome from 4pm-6:30pm.
Should the series conclude on Friday night, the team is scheduled to return home on Saturday, departing the hotel in Rome at 8:30am with arrival back on campus at Calvary scheduled for approximately 2:30pm.

For the first time since 2019, the Savannah Mile presented by the 200 Club of the Coastal Empire is taking place in downtown Savannah. The charitable event is scheduled to begin at 8 am on Saturday, May 18 as part of National Law Enforcement Appreciation Week (May 12-18).
The course is straight, moving along Drayton Street, with each race beginning at the south end of Forsyth Park and the finish line at the corner of Broughton and Drayton Streets.
The iconic event is an important fundraiser for the 200 Club, a nonprofit organization which provides support to families of fallen first responders by contributing significant financial assistance, as well as providing a fully paid college education to surviving kids of the deceased.

The Savannah Mile features six heats for all ages and abilities, including family and age group divisions, followed by a “Memory Walk” for the families of fallen heroes to walk the mile in memory of, and to honor, their loved ones.
An annual highlight of the event is the “Heroes Heat,” which serves as the event finale and is open to all first responders and military. This is the heat where many of the participants will run the mile wearing their full 30-pound gear, a requirement to be eligible to win the coveted “Full Gear All Out Flag.”

Tournament officials for The Club Car Championship at The Landings Golf & Athletic Club announced the 2024 event, contested the week of April 1-7, raised more than $450,000 for charitable organizations in the greater Savannah area.
