CHECK YOUR HEAD: A BEASTIE BOYS TRIBUTE @ VICTORY NORTH

They went from a crappy punk band to the old school Run-DMC wannabe greatness of “License to Ill.” As an encore, they dropped possibly the greatest hip-hop achievement to date, “Paul’s Boutique.” That’s a solid foundation for a tribute band. The killer follow-up material, including this act’s namesake, is gravy.

THUR APR 13 | 8 PM

SUN/DOWN @ BARRELHOUSE SOUTH

The Statesboro/GSU fellas churn out one hard rock and pop punk hit song after another, slipping in a country rocker here and there to keep it all properly Southern. Covering bands like Guns N Roses, Nirvana, The Killers, Green Day, and Fallout Boy, the college house party vibe is strong. “May I have 10,000 beers, please?”

SAT APR 8 | 8 PM

HOUSE OF GUNT – BLESSED IX @ CLUB ONE + LODGE OF SORROWS

A hundred straight days of other drag burlesque shows cannot prepare you for the unexpected, unspeakable debauchery a House of Gunt show promises. At HoG’s two-night special for the ninth annual installment of the Blessed series, it’s positively unimaginable. Even minor details can’t be conveyed in a family publication, so take that as the description and endorsement.

CLUB ONE: THUR APR 6 | 9 PM

LODGE OF SORROWS: SAT APR  8 | 9 PM

GATSBY GALA @ SHIPS OF THE SEA MUSEUM

Live jazz from the seven-piece Savannah Stompers Band, heavy hors d’oeuvres, all kinds of booze, and a distinct speakeasy atmosphere are the vibe at this party. Dress for the event (photographers will be on hand), say things like “duck soup” and have a 1920s kind of night. Bring canned goods for charity, too, but no wax beans.

FRI APR 7 | 8 PM

ESCUELA GRIND + BONGINATOR @ THE SENTIENT BEAN

Straddling the barely-visible line between hardcore punk, grindcore and powerviolence, Escuela Grind says a lot in a short period of time. The songs are short, hostile, and if you saw Shitstorm at the Lodge a couple of weeks ago and loved it, this trio is for you. Bonginator have fun with their self-described “two-stepping neon weed death” and come from an alternate universe where weed was always legal. Welcome them.

SAT APR 8 | 7:30 PM

TROPIDELIC @ THE WORMHOLE

The Cleveland six-piece play a popular mix of reggae, hip-hop, and high energy funk with audience-pleasing results. Band members have their own obsessions with certain genres, but they play it all and play it well. The fun they’re having is contagious.

THU APR 13 | 8 PM

SMOKEY JONES & THE 3 DOLLAR PISTOLS @ COACH’S CORNER

If you need a fix of whiskey-soaked, old school, honky-tonk country music, Smokey Jones is your man. A disciple of Hank, George, Merle, Buck, and a slew of other legends, his mission is to bring back and/or keep alive the music and spirit those people created. Okay, sure, they were all pill-popping alcoholics, but you get the idea.

THUR APR 6 | 8 PM

DEAF ANDREWS  @ THE WORMHOLE

The Charlotte-based rock band is made up of five friends who’ve known each other since they were kids. They employ an unusual three-guitar setup, but it’s not giant guitar rock. Rather, they use texture, strong vocals, jazz-influenced leads, and an absolute ton of talent to make compelling and emotional rock. Nothing extreme, which might make them their own kind of extremists.
