An undercover operation performed by the Georgia Bureau of Investigation’s Human Exploitation and Trafficking Unit (HEAT) netted 17 arrests, according to a GBI statement released on Jan. 31. Miles Diede, a former Director of Ticket Sales and Operations for the Savannah Ghost Pirates hockey team, was one of the 17 arrested in “Operation Not For Sale.”
The operation targeted sex traffickers and sex buyers in and around the Bryan County area, according to the GBI. Three people were charged with pimping and 14 with pandering. Diede, 29, was one of the 14 arrested for pandering.
When reached for comment by email late on Friday, Feb. 2, Savannah Ghost Pirates’ Director of Communications Cristiano Simonetta said that Diede is no longer employed with the Savannah Ghost Pirates.
“We confirm that he was once employed by us, and we can also confirm that he is no longer employed by us,” said Simonetta.
He is no longer listed on the team’s front office staff directory on the official team website, but Diede’s LinkedIn profile confirms his former title as the team’s Director of Ticket Sales and Operations. On Thursday, Feb. 1, the Ghost Pirates announced news of a firing when head coach Rick Bennett was relieved from his role and interim coach Alex Loh was named his temporary successor.
There was no team-issued announcement regarding Diede’s arrest or employment status.
“We will have no further comment at this time,” said Simonetta.
It is unclear when Diede’s employment with the team ended. Simonetta would not confirm if Diede was terminated and it is unclear if his departure from the team was directly due to the arrest.
Diede, a BYU graduate, was named the 2023 Sales Professional of the Year by the ECHL in the franchise’s first ever season. It was an honor that was highlighted on the team’s official X (Twitter) profile on June 29, 2023.
The GBI said their investigation is active and ongoing, and more arrests could follow the original 17. The bureau’s press release also added the following regarding the goals and methods of the operation.
“Operation Not for Sale involved months of planning and the collaboration of four law enforcement agencies to combat human trafficking,” the release says.
“The arrestees, ranging in age from 21 to 49, traveled from areas around Bryan County with the intent to purchase sex or sell sex. The goal was to draw in sex buyers for demand reduction and draw in sex workers to offer services. The objective was to identify and arrest pimps and human traffickers through this two-fold approach.”
