An investigation is ongoing after police say shots were fired from a vehicle on Monday morning near Windsor Forest High School. Officers responded to a call near the corner of Abercorn Street and Largo Drive just after 7am on Monday, May 13, according to a statement provided to Connect Savannah by the Savannah Police Department (SPD) on Wednesday, May 15.

“SPD responded to the 12000 block of Largo Drive at 7:10am on reports of a shooting,” Public Information Officer Neil Penttila said through email. “It is believed around nine rounds were fired from a vehicle. The public should contact CrimeStoppers at 912.234.2020 if they have any information.”

Windsor Forest High School, located at 12419 Largo Drive on Savannah’s southside, was placed on lockdown for the entirety of the school day on Monday after reports of shots being fired near the school. The Savannah Chatham County Public School System (SCCPSS) placed the school on lockdown, per protocol, once SPD officers were on the scene.

When reached by phone on Monday evening, both the SPD and the Board of Education (BOE) were unclear about the status of a potential investigation into what happened.

“SPD sent a detective out and conducted interviews. Shell casings were found in the city street. It’s the city’s investigation,” said the Board of Education Police Department (BOEPD) through a spokesperson on Monday.

SPD officials said officers were dispatched on Monday morning only to assist the Board of Education police, adding that the city’s police department was “not tracking” the incident and that it was “a BOE matter.” On Wednesday, the school district provided Connect Savannah with another statement, again saying that SPD is leading an investigation into the matter.

“The investigation of shots fired near WFHS is ongoing,” reads the statement from Wednesday. “BOEPD is working with SPD, the lead agency. There was some evidence collected at the scene and witnesses were interviewed. No further information is available at this time.”

Penttila did not answer questions seeking confirmation that SPD was leading an investigation which includes assistance from BOEPD, as the school district had stated.

As of Wednesday evening, SPD had not released any public information about the incident. Unlike many shooting events where SPD officers are dispatched, there were no press releases issued on Monday’s matter.

The condition of a potential victim(s), including if any sustained gunshot wounds, was unclear as of Wednesday evening. There were, however, no fatalities reported at the scene on Monday.

The Savannah Police Department provided more information after this story was originally published. SPD says it “does not put out press releases on shootings where no one is injured.”
