Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police Department’s Patrol Division and Criminal Investigations Division majors made these remarks about recent armed robbery shootings and homicides in Savannah:
“SCMPD is redirecting personnel and technology to address armed robberies and shootings. We are also requesting additional state law enforcement resources to increase visibility and improve public safety. Again, we are asking the public to step forward with information about any of our open shooting, robbery and homicide investigations. Making this community safer is a shared responsibility,” said Patrol Operations Major Kerry Thomas.
“Violent crimes detective continue to work around the clock to chase down leads and make arrests in these cases and have taken on additional visibilities roles,” said Criminal Investigations Division Major Richard Zapal.
Police Chief Joseph Lumpkin hasn’t issued a public statement as of this writing.

Redirecting? What have they been doing? This is not a new issue… And by issue I mean, PEOPLE LOSING THEIR LIVES.
“Again, we are asking the public” -so the SCPD’s plea and best request is for the public to come forward with any helpful information regarding the ONGOING investigations— what about some preventative measures?! Ask the public to engage in a curfew, ask the public to man their streets, ask the public to report anyone suspicious!
Savannah has over 40 gangs. These are mostly hand thugs seeking praise and acceptance into a gang or maintaining a presence in a gang. We’ve always had a lots of crime just not do many shootings and murders. Not all crimes are reported. Lots aren’t I promise you. Lots of criminals aren’t punished nearly at all because the system and people are on the take. Crooked and thieves are the paper pushers/law enforcers. It’s a damn embarrassing shame we can’t control the crime. Pitiful. We have the money and resources to solve this. Just do it and say NO to other projects which are secondary. If we aren’t safe and don’t go to those areas, we are strangling our growth and slitting our throats. Tourists have choices and they don’t choose high dangerous crime areas Wake up Savannah. Stop crime by enforcing the consequences
Idiots running this city and even bigger idiots running around robbing and killing people….recipe for disaster. THUGS WITH GUNS…..RUN FOR YA LIFE!!!!!!
Of course “the public” should share information if they have it, but this is a repeated response from the cops here. It is a blatant attempt to blame the victims.
City Clowncil repeatedly squanders our property tax money on these wild real estate speculation adventures and anything left (and not skimmed off by city hall insiders) is given away as handouts and freebies to a select group of client
“deprived”. And what happened after that recent big press conference held by our local “leaders” along with state and federal authorities saying they would work together to stop these outrages? Nothing at all.
