An inmate in the Chatham County Detention Center became "combative during the booking process and was subsequently restrained," a Sheriff's Dept. spokesperson says.

While being restrained, 22-year-old Matthew Ajibade injured three deputies, according to the department.

"A female Sergeant suffered a concussion and broken nose, while two male deputies suffered injuries consistent with an affray," the department says.

Ajibade was in custody  since 6:40pm on 1/1/15, after being arrested by the Savannah Chatham Metropolitan Police Department accused of Domestic Violence Act, Battery, and Obstruction by resisting arrest.

"The inmate was placed in an isolation cell due to his dangerous behavior. Upon the inmates second welfare check the inmate appeared non responsive," the department says.

""The Medical Unit staff started CPR and administered defibrillation while preparing the subject for transport to Memorial Medical Center. Efforts to resuscitate the inmate were unsuccessful."

Per protocol, the Georgia Bureau of Investigation was requested to conduct an independent investigation. A definitive cause of death will not be made until autopsy, lab results, and the G.B.I. investigation are completed.
