On Saturday, Oct. 14, nearly 60 booths gathered to showcase their artwork, which included jewelry, ceramics, photography, mixed media and more. It was an opportunity to discover artisans and support a local neighborhood.
“All of these people are local, many of them have no gallery connection," said Gale Steves, a member of the Gordonston Art Fair Committee.“I call them my hidden gems."
Planning the Gordonston Art Fair took about a year and grew significantly from last year's fair. “People are invited from all over and we invite the presidents of the local neighborhood associations because we want to encourage people to do this in their neighborhoods, it's not just about us," Steves said.
For artist Carol Ruesswick's, the event proved successful. "Seven pieces already," she said, referring to the number she had sold, "and let's keep counting!" It was her first time as an artist in the fair and it won't be her last.
Jessica Price, a teacher at Shuman Elementary, had her students create Fall themed pieces to display at the fair. “It’s so great for them to have an opportunity to see that their creativity is really appreciated. So often we focus on their academic achievement and forget about the other aspects of their lives that are so important,” she said.
