Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp is calling for support for the UGA football team ahead of tonight's national championship game that pits the Georgia Bulldogs against the Texas Christian Univ. Horned Frogs.
On Sunday, Gov. Kemp (a UGA graduate himself) issued an official proclamation that Monday would be declared 'Hunker Down Day' in Georgia. The proclamation was promptly shared on social media sites across the state.
Just as I did before last year’s big #NationalChampionship win, I am proclaiming game day (Mon., Jan. 9) as #HunkerDownDay in Georgia!

The "Hunker Down" moniker comes from a line by legendary play-by-play announcer Larry Munson, referencing the Georgia defense. Kemp issued a similar proclamation ahead of last year's title game between Georgia and Alabama, urging football fans across the state to wear red and black in support of the Bulldogs.
"In 2022, Georgians were invited to wear red and black on the day of the national championship and were rewarded with their first title in over 40 years," Kemp said in the proclamation. "Now, with a new breed of Bulldog ready to take the field of battle, let us all once again rally behind the men who now wear the red and black and, as the great Larry Munson once said, 'Hunker it down one more time.'"
In addition, the Governors of both states offered a friendly wager on the game.
Texas Governor Greg Abbott tweeted a challenge to Kemp Monday morning, wagering “some of the best BBQ in Texas” and a cold Lone Star beer that the TCU Horned Frogs would win.
Kemp accepted the wager and responded he’d ante up “some delicious chopped pork & Brunswick stew” from middle Georgia's famous Fresh Air Bar-B-Que.
We accept your wager, @GregAbbott_TX! In return, we’re wagering some delicious chopped pork & Brunswick stew from @FreshAirBBQue.
