Holiday Happenings: Celebrate MLK Day at these Commemorative Events

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. was a remarkable leader whose virtuous efforts during the Civil Rights movement brought about equity and freedom for countless people in America, while inspiring millions around the world. Each year on the third Monday in January, our nation sets aside the day to honor the life and legacy of Dr. King. This year, we observe MLK Day on Jan. 16. And there are a few commemorative events taking place around town this year. Show your appreciation for King’s activism and accomplishments by attending these events.

Tybee MLK Celebration

The Tybee MLK Human Rights Organization is celebrating 10 years of making “good trouble” this MLK Day with a parade and program on Saturday, Jan.14 at Tybee Post Theater. The celebration will start at 2 p.m. with a small parade, of which Retired Judge Leroy Burke III will be the grand marshal. After the parade, attendees can enjoy a special commemorative program featuring musicians, dancers, drummers and guest speakers. 

MLK 5k/10k

Local running outfitter, Howe 2 Run is hosting their annual MLK 5k/10k race on Jan. 16 at 7:30 a.m. at 11 Gateway Blvd. After the run, participants can enjoy vendors and music as well as hot fish and grits. Registration is required and includes a shirt, medal and photos. Proceeds will benefit Blessing in a Bookbag.

MLK Parade

The city’s Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Parade returns to Savannah’s streets for the first time since covid pandemic. Taking place on Jan. 16, the parade will begin at 10 a.m. beginning at the intersection of East Broad Street and Liberty Street. The grand marshals for this year’s parade are State Representative Carl Gilliard and former president of the MLK Observance Day Association, Carolyn Blackshear. For the parade route, click here

Mighty Eighth MLK Jr. Day Camp

The Mighty Eighth Air Force Museum is hosting an MLK Day Camp on Jan. 16 from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. for children ages 6-12. The camp will include lunch and plenty of engaging, entertaining and educational activities. Registration is required.
