“Conversations” with The Teddy Adams’ Quartet & The Spitfire Poetry Group
This first-ever collaboration between local jazz trombonist and champion Adams and the pioneering spoken word organization known as Spitfire is designed to celebrate the long and shared history of the related art forms. It’s a symbiotic relationship that runs through the literary rhythms of the late James Baldwin, through Beats like Corso, Ginsberg and Burroughs, as well as the standup commentary of Lenny Bruce and George Carlin. And that doesn’t even take into consideration such hip wordsmiths as Lord Buckley, Brother Theodore and Ken “Word Jazz” Nordine.
Visual artists will also take part in this family-oriented, multi-ethnic event which Spitfire spokesman Renazance calls “easily the most innovative and creative collaborations I’ve ever been a part of.” For more info, go to: www.spitfirepoetrygroup.com. Drum & Bass w/Cyanide & Atlantic Connection
Here’s another major DnB showcase courtesy of locals Symbiotek Productions. This time out, featured artists include Daniel Pollard (aka Cyanide), who was raised —and began his musical career— in Savannah. This will be his first visit back from Philly since making a name for himself in the U.S. DnB community via his group Quadrant, who saw their work released on the established Renegade Hardware label. Making his local debut will be N.C.’s Nathan Hayes, aka Atlantic Connection, a solo artist who previously gained notoriety under the handle Basic Operations. That production group and touring DJ act became one of the biggest draws in America, but now Hayes is getting back to his roots with a renewed interest in laid-back, chillout vibes. This is a great opportunity to help revitalize Savannah’s fledgling DnB scene. Sat., 10 pm, Savannah Down Under Invasion Level 3.
Entropy
This hard-grooving Athens-based combo racked up hometown accolades right from the start, and now, they’re branching out. Recently named Best R & B/Soul/Funk Band in Atlanta by Creative Loafing, their modern update on classic James Brown and George Clinton dance music is both welcome and in the pocket. This is their first local date in quite a while, and precedes the release of their new CD by just a few weeks. Get on the good foot! Sat., 10 pm, Locos Deli & Pub.
The Barry Greene Trio
A world-class jazz guitarist (just ask fellow world-class axeman Pat Martino) whose work bears the unmistakable influence of such 6-string greats as Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass and George Benson, Greene’s worked with such heavyweights as Russell Malone and Danny Gottleib. In addition to authoring instructional books for Mel Bay, he’s an Associate Professor of Jazz Guitar at the University of North Florida. Talent of this caliber in a 60-seat room for 5 bucks is a treat and a half. Fri. - Sat., 9 pm, Kokopelli’s Jazz Club.
Sinister Moustache
This aggressively peculiar instrumental art-metal outfit has been one of the area’s best-kept musical secrets for years now, and some say they’re the ones that work hardest to keep things that way. They never fail to create unpredictable, prog-friendly epics that sounds like Dick Dale getting face-frigged in Darediablo’s rehearsal space while listening to My Life In The Bush of Ghosts. “Work o’ The Weavers”
The Savannah Folk Music Society presents this heartfelt 2-act tribute concert mixing the music of iconic, blacklisted folkies The Weavers with an historical narrative that tells the story of this quintessential American acoustic folk group (which spearheaded the ‘50s and ‘60s U.S. folk revival).
