Justin Beckler

Terrific and talented Atlanta rocker (by way of St. Petersburg, Florida), whose self-produced debut is a minor DIY masterpiece of lush and brainy indie pop, recalling everyone from Daniel Lanois to The The. He has an extremely well-developed sense of self that bleeds through in his assured performances. With dour local songwriter Kenneth Cowen. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Belle's Wake

Scott Waters and Andrew Currie have spent several weeks recording their debut as part of Scott’s studies in audio engineering at SCAD. The Nature of The Ground is an earnestly delivered collection of organic, piano-based tunes that reference the keyboard-based mood-pieces of folks like Ben Folds and Tori Amos. They also betray the duo’s affinity for the melodramatic ruminations of Radiohead. For this show, they will perform selections from the album, and give away free copies of the finished disc. Mon., 9 pm, Mercury Lounge.

Bellyfull

Bad-ass regional funk group with plenty to offer those who dig on syncopated jazz fusion like The Meters, middle-period Stevie Wonder, and the edgier moments of first-wave Steely Dan. This is tight, soulful, and precise groove music which may appeal to jam fans, but which reaches far beyond standard-issue blooze explorations. Sat., Savannah Blues.

Hinesville’s Blues & Barbecue Fest

This salute to our men and women in uniform features a variety of BBQ vendors and live music from The Bonaventures. Formerly known as The John Banks Trio, this quartet features members of The Sapphire Bullets and The Veraflames, and specializes in rock, soul and blues cover tunes. $5 to get in, or free with active duty Military ID. Meatjack

Not much can prepare you for the onslaught of a Meatjack show. This Baltimore band (on At A Loss Recordings) creates some of the most seemingly chaotic and crushing noisecore currently being made. With plenty of focused, intentional white noise and a rather disturbingly creepy aura, they’re not for the fainthearted. Meatjack side-project Suckpig and local metal band Chronicle A/D open. Passafire

Underrated local group blending jamming reggae and Hip-hop into a promising hybrid. Tues., Fiddler’s Crab House.

Meika Pauley

This 23-year-old Cambridge, Mass guitarist and singer was just named winner of the Rocky Mountain Folks Festival Songwriter Showcase, and is part of a Starbuck’s compilation CD that’s been released nationwide. Her sound is rooted in blues and soul, and she’s been likened to a young Sarah McLachlan. Her last visit to town was very well-received. Tues., The Sentient Bean.

The Permanent Tourists

The Rosebuds

One of the most refreshing alternative groups in the Southeast, this trio plays perky, sing-song rock that’s heavy on chang-chang guitar and rinky-dink keyboard. Live, they’re looser than their brilliant debut CD, but fans of The Modern Lovers, The Feelies, or Let’s Active will have a blast. With Hot Young Priest (see Connect Recommends). Fri., The Jinx.

Sam Shaber

This NYC-based contemporary folk artist has family in Savannah, and plays here on an increasingly regular basis. She’s won awards in the John Lennon, Billboard and USA Songwriting Contests, and her latest album was produced by the Grammy-nominated Shawn Mullins. She’s known for sharp lyrical observations and an impressive vocal range. With local opening act Lauren Lapointe. Fri., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Kyle Shiver

Sometimes billed as “Georgia Kyle,” this singer/songwriter has an expressive voice, solid guitar technique, and a bevy of memorable originals to complement his wide repertoire of folk, blues and rock covers. He’s also part of The Back River Ramblers. Wed., Fiddler’s Crab House.

Randy "Hatman" Smith

Perennial island guitarist and singer known for crowd-pleasing beach, boogie and blues covers. Wed., The Oyster Bar (Wilmington Island).

St. Somewhere

Self-described “Caribbean Flavored Explosive Rock” band that is making Savannah a regular stop on their touring schedule. Their secret weapons? A Trinidad native who plays steel drums and keyboards and solid four-part vocal harmonies. Sat., Locos Deli & Pub.

Gail Thurmond

For over a decade, this versatile pianist and vocalist has held court at this cozy darkwood bar. Her shows include standards from Johnny Mercer, Hoagy Carmichael, Cole Porter and others, plus her own compositions. She has just released her second album, and is well on her way to becoming a Savannah fixture. Tues. - Sun., The Planters Tavern (below The Olde Pink House).

Two Blue

Guitarist/singer/percussionist Jeff Beasley, vocalist/harpist Daniel Valentino, and bassist Nate Saraceno – offering traditional city blues (a la Sonny Boy Williamson). Fri., 9 pm, Jazz’d Tapas Bar.

Voodoo Soup
