Music Menu

A Different Self

Philly-based “sick noise-core” trio. Sat., The Jinx.

Mick Ayres

See Connect Recommends. Fri., 7:30 pm, Randy Wood’s Concert Hall (Bloomingdale).

Big Shot Shot Down

Low-profile local act playing heavy, aggressive, angular post-punk with nods to both early emo and obstacle-course math rock – fronted by Jon Proctor (of the seminal Savannah underground band Bughummer – whose long out-of-print CD was just reissued by the Über-trendy Lovitt Records). Fri., The Jinx.

Black Tusk

The new musical outlet for some members of beloved-but-defunct Savannah punk groups HammÜrd Shit and The Bricks. Mon., The Jinx.

The Classic Struggle

Extreme and cacophonous modern metal from Myrtle Beach with lots of shrieking, downhill slalom riffing and off-kilter rhythm changes. Mon., The Jinx.

Council Of The Fallen

Intense, brooding, seemingly Satanic metal band (from the minitaure golf capital of Myrtle Beach as well). Musically, they’re tight, polished, and impressive. Stylistically, though, their anguished pose seems more than a tad forced. Mon., The Jinx.

John Williams Davis

See Connect Recommends. Thurs., 8 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Eat Mo' Music

New local instrumental quintet (trumpet, bass, drums, trombone and guitar) offering jazz, blues and funk grooves all the way from Miles to The Average White Band (I wonder which one of their songs...). Fri. - Sat., 8:30 pm, Moon River Brewing Company.

1st Friday For Folk Music

See Connect Recommends. Fri., 7:30 pm, Wesleyan United Methodist Church (429 Abercorn St.).

Kristin Gustafson

This classically-trained concert harpist breaks tradition by offering experimental renditions of popular songs on this most mysterious instrument, as well as her own compositions. She’ll be performing for free every Saturday in January at this unique Broughton Street eatery. Sat., 11 am, Café Mucha.

Hot Pink Interior

See Music Interview. Fri., The Jinx.

Keith & Ross

Country and rock covers and originals that lean toward a jam-band aesthetic, featuring key members of Two Path Road. Thurs., Fiddler’s Crab House.

The Lords of Nonsuch

Formerly The Greg Hester Band, this St. Simons Island based act says they play “Southern soul and jump up and dance” covers. Think Van Morrison. Fri., 10 pm, Mercury Lounge.

The Marshall Brothers

Acoustic guitar duo of Stewart and Jim Marshall, offering rootsy, Americana covers and like-minded originals. Sat., Fiddler’s Crab House.

Monarch

Extreme metal from Richmond, Va. with pummelling drums, frenetic, distorted guitar riffs and throat-shredding vocals to spare. Sat., The Jinx.

Joe Nelson’s Old-Time Jam

All string musicians are welcome to join in on old (pre-WWII) Americana tunes at this educational open mic. Mon., 7 pm, The Sentient Bean.

Showbread

See Connect Recommends. Sat., The Jinx.

Chris Talley

This multi-instrumentalist (banjo, dobro, guitar) singer/songwriter from Athens lists Ryan Adams and Tom Petty as heroes, and makes Savannah a regular stop both with his sensitive roots-rock band and as a solo act. Sat., O’Connell’s Irish Pub.

Gail Thurmond

Resplendent takes on piano jazz and show tunes from a true downtown fixture. No visit to Savannah is complete without catching Gail’s fireside show. Tues. - Sun., Planters Tavern (below The Olde Pink House).
