SSU's Southern Regional Press Institute to highlight 'Sports Journalism in the Era of Politics and Protests'

Savannah State University will host its 67th annual Southern Regional Press Institute (SRPI) on February 22 and 23 on campus.

SRPI is a two-day mass media conference primarily for college students from the Southeast. Workshops are offered for high school, middle and elementary school students who are involved in student media in their schools.

The theme for the 67th SRPI is “Sports Journalism in the Era of Politics and Protests.” Garry D. Howard worked as an executive sports editor for the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel and later, as editor-in-chief of Sporting News. He also served as the president of the Associated Press (AP) sports editors.

Howard will deliver the opening address on Thursday, February 22, 9 a.m., in the Student Union ballroom.

Bethany Allen-Ebrahimian, journalist with Foreign Policy Magazine, will bring the address at the Milledge-Owens Awards Luncheon on Friday, February 23, 11:30 a.m., in the King-Frazier ballroom. Her work as also appeared in The New York Times, The Washington Post and The Atlantic. Allen-Ebrahimian is also the president and co-founder of the International China Journalists Association. The speaker is co-sponsored by SSU’s Confucius Institute.

Workshops in photography, photography, media management, editing, magazine and feature writing, radio broadcasting, public relations, app development and more are instructed by media professionals and journalism educators from across the nation. (Connect editor-in-chief Jim Morekis is scheduled to give a master class workshop on writing columns and editorials.)

Additionally, the SRPI Job and Internship Fair will be held Wednesday, February 21, 2:30 – 5:30 p.m., Adams Hall. Local and national media companies will interview mass communications students who desire internships or permanent employment.
