‘A Centered Sense of Place’ -- This MFA thesis show comprises fiber work that documents remembrances, intersections of a certain time and place.

Runs from May 19 to June 14 at Bergen Hall Gallery (101 Martin Luther King, Jr. Blvd). The opening reception is May 20, from 5-7 p.m. Regular gallery hours are Monday to Friday 9-5. Free and open to the public.

‘Ritual Interiors’ -- Photographs by Natalie Bray comprise this MFA Thesis show at Iocovozzi Fine Art, 12 W. Harris St. Runs through May 29. Opening reception is Thursday, May 20, 7-10 p.m.

Alvida Art Gallery turns one -- This Southside gallery at 7303 Abercorn St., Suite D, marks its 1st anniversary. Featured artists include painters Ruth Hunter, Ken Meyer Jr., Jeff Ziegler and Jessica Palmer; potter Giana Eden; jeweler Phyllis Lang; sculptor Kim Kluender; ceramicist Yves Paquette; and photographers Theresa McGraw, Peggy Chartier, and Kirt Witte; and new works by owners Anne and Judith.

‘New Works for Spring’ -- This exhibit at Venus de Milo will feature work by local artists Mark Forehand, Chela Gutierrez, Shelley Smith, Jon Proctor, Margaret Brennen, & Bryce Griffis. Reception May 20 from 7:30-9:30 p.m. May 17 to July 1 at 38 MLK Jr. Blvd.

Greenpeace Russia Photo Exhibit -- At the Starland Center of Contemporary Art, 24-28 Bull St. June 4-15. Opening reception First Friday June 4th 6-10 p.m. Free and open to the public. Greenpeace Russia will be exhibiting this photo exhibit at StarCCA during the G8 Summit. The G8 makes numerous decisions that impact nuclear waste/nuclear weapons/nuclear clean up funding-type issues in Russia and in the U.S.

DRAIN call for papers -- DRAIN, a new online journal for contemporary art and culture, is currently accepting works for its next issue. Go to www.drainmag.com/.

This upcoming issue of DRAIN aims to question the relationship between local community action and globalization, and to consider that throughout anti-globalization protests, the Internet and cyberspace play a vital role. DRAIN would like to invite essays and reviews that respond to the themes of globalization and protest, power and cyberspace, surveillance culture, art activism, cultural imperialism, and “digital third worlds.”

DRAIN is a peer-reviewed on-line journal. It is published quarterly in collaboration with the independent artist collective Aquaspace with text formatted for printing in Adobe Acrobat PDF files. All feature essays are to be no more than 4,000 words. DRAIN requests authors submitting feature essays for consideration, to use the footnote system and to send the document (along with a brief biographical note) as an email attachment saved as a Word file. A minimum of three images and a maximum of eight are to accompany essays unless pure theory.

Reviews are not to exceed 1,500 words. Reviews are to be sent as an email attachment saved as a Word file. A minimum of one image and a maximum of four are to accompany each review unless a book review where no image is required. Reviews can cover any art form: fine art, moving image, sound, book, or performance. Images are to be sent as j-peg files. All attachments are to be titled with the author’s surname.

Spot III -- Independent art exhibit of the work of over 40 local artists at St. Andrew’s Church at Montgomery and Broughton. Runs Sat. May 15-May 21.

‘Secret Gardens New York: Designer Handbags by Karen Sharf’ -- SCAD presents this exhibit May 13-June 12, at Pinnacle Gallery, 320 E. Liberty St. Free.

‘The Rules of Abstraction’ -- O’Reilly and Soto present this photography exhibit May 6-27 at Gallery Espresso, 234 Bull St.

‘Relationships’ -- The Savannah College of Art and Design presents an annual exhibition of student sequential artwork, May 17-June 20, at Orleans Hall Gallery, 201 Barnard St. Free and open to the public.

Art of Jayne McNeely -- AASU senior art education exhibition through May 27. Free admission.

‘New Visions’ -- A collection of pottery by Haitian artist Serge Gay. The opening reception will be held at the Beach Institute on Tuesday, June 1st at 6 p.m. Show runs June 1 through June 10. ‘New Visions’ presents many types of pottery sculptures including vases, plates and statues. This exhibit is free and open to the public. The Beach Institute is located at the corner of Price and Harris Streets.

‘The Graphic World of William Hogarth’ -- Features 2 dozen prints by the 18th Century English artist. Through June 30 at SCAD’s Newton Center, 227 MLK Jr. Blvd.

Sandra Edgar Davies -- The Art Show at the JEA, 5111 Abercorn, beginning May 1 will feature the works of this local artist.

‘Imprint of Time’ -- The Downtown Athletic Club Gallery is featuring international artist Daniel E. Smith. The show, features a collection of contemporary paintings in encaustic and oil. Through May 30th during DAC hours.

‘Work and Progress’ -- Retrospective by SCAD professor Michael Brown at The Opus Gallery on Chippewa Square. Exhibition benefits the Shepherd Center in Atlanta. The exhibit runs through Saturday, May 29.

‘Monitor Madness’ -- Digital work by SCAD students, staff and faculty that explores the format of the 16:9 aspect ratio of the plasma screen television. April 30-June 1, at La Galerie Bleue inside Montgomery Hall, 3515 Montgomery St. Free and open to the public.

‘Weaving Geographies’ -- SCAD presents an exhibition of Nene Humphrey’s sculptural works inspired by the Miao people of China, April 20-June 6, at Pei Ling Chan Gallery, 322 MLK Jr. Blvd. Free.

‘Ray Ellis: A Painter’s Journey’ -- This retrospective of the famed Lowcountry artist runs through June 13 at the Telfair Museum of Art, 121 Barnard St.
