The Best of Savannah

Best Local TV News Anchor

Sonny Dixon, WTOC

This year was the last time you got to vote for Sonny Dixon as best anchor—and to have it count, anyway.

Dixon, who became the face of Savannah’s highest-rated newscast with the retirement of Doug Weathers, has announced his retirement after nearly 15 years with the station.

“Just 15 days and I’m off and away on my Harley!” Sonny wrote us the other day. This Best of Savannah award from our readers should be just the right send-off for a ride into the sunset.

Before assuming his role at WTOC, Dixon cut his teeth on local politics as a Democratic state representative from West Chatham in the Georgia General Assembly from 1989-1997—back when there were actually a lot of Democrats in the Georgia General Assembly. In 2002 the legislature renamed the intersection of Route 21 and Jimmy Deloach Parkway in his honor.

Runner-up: Tina Tyus-Shaw, WSAV
