AUSPICIOUS BAKERY: Best Local Bakery

2023 BEST OF SAVANNAH

BEST LOCAL BAKERY

AUSPICIOUS BAKING COMPANY

With new eateries coming on the scene seemingly monthly, it is very easy to get caught up in debate.

I see it all the time on social media, visitors to our area (and sometimes even locals) like to ask “What is the absolute best place for (insert name of food).”

A lot of times, it’s seafood. Other times it’s burgers or pizza or fried chicken. Everyone has an opinion. Some of those opinions are blasphemous, but hey, they are an opinion just the same.

One thing I do believe there is a consensus across Savannah is that we have a best bakery.

That’s Auspicious Baking Company.

For roughly six years now, Mark Ekstrohm and Katie Bryant have been delivering solid baked goods all over town.

You know you are doing something right when about two dozen cafes in Savannah are carrying something you make in your own bakery. They are proud to do so too.

It is not uncommon for a business to brag about the fact that they “proudly carry” anything from Auspicious they can get their hands on.

As a result, the demand for both wholesale and retail is through the roof.

Kaitlyn tells me they outgrew their space for production in Sandfly very quickly. There is currently a search for a larger space to make more goodies.

“It’s no secret we outgrew our space for baking a while ago.” she says. “Everyone sees it when they come in. We are all bumping into the each other trying to get around.”

“I just don’t want to scare anyone into thinking we are leaving our retail space in Sandfly.”

Fair enough.

If you remember back to 2017 when Katie and Mark started this tiny “mom and pop shop” it was up the street on Skidaway Road near Eisenhower.

The lines on Saturday mornings were legendary. They sold out on the regular. Almost immediately they needed more space.

That led to them moving to their current location in the heart of Sandfly.

The Saturday morning lines still exist, but the fact that they are open for retail sales four days a week definitely helps alleviate the congestion on the weekends.

A little. Kinda, sorta.

If you’ve never tried any of the baked goodness from Auspicious, you are definitely in the minority around here.

Most everyone has. Sweet, savory or anything in between.

Personally, I don’t think I’ve had anything from Auspicious that wasn’t among the best of the item I’ve ever had.

Yes, it is that good.

Not only were they winner of our Eat It and Like It Foodie Award for Best Bakery, but it is also why why Connect Savannah’s voters also named them the best in town.

There is very little debate on this one. They are accolades well deserved, and a must try if you haven’t already.

Dare I say you will Eat It and Like It.
