Seafood pop ups highlight spring season

It’s been one of the most talked about topics on the food scene for months, if not longer. We’ve all seen the build out going up on the West side of Franklin Square since way back in 2021. Charleston, SC based The Darling Oyster Bar is coming to Savannah soon, but before we get to their opening later in the spring, The Darling will be headlining a vibrant spring pop up season in Savannah. Especially if you like seafood.

Darling Executive Chef Derrick Wade and his Savannah crew will be setting up shop at The Thompson Hotel over the next five or so weeks offering Savannah a sneak preview of the menu they plan to roll out once they open their doors.

The pop up will happen every Monday and Tuesday evening beginning March 25th at the Bar at Fleeting inside the Thompson at the Eastern Wharf on President’s Street. Chef Derrick says he plans to offer a lot of their regular menu over the five-week pop up event, with some items rotating out week to week.

This event will be popular and space will be limited. Questions about reservations should be directed to the Thompson Hotel.

Bluffton’s Kai Sushi visiting Savannah

Not to be outdone on the pop up circuit this week is Bluffton-based chef Josh Goldfarb. Josh is a chef and fish monger who has developed a solid following with a series of beautifully crafted sushi pop up dinners. They are calling it Sushi Sunday and it’s a collaboration with Savannah’s Ordinary Pub.

Josh will prepare 12 sushi courses. They will be paired with six ‘scientifically strategic’ cocktails. Here’s the catch. They will offer three seatings on Sunday March 24th at 3pm, 5pm and 7pm. At each seating there will be eight spots available and they will very likely sell out in advance. They always do at his events in the Low Country.

The 12 courses and cocktail pairings are going for $135 per person all-inclusive. A great deal if you love sushi. I’ve attended one of these and they are wonderful. Josh is a great talent. You will enjoy every bite. Tickets can be snapped up at 217 West Broughton Street or by calling The Ordinary Pub at (912) 238-5130.

This and That:

*Float the brand new coffee shop at Two Tides Brewing Company is now open in the Starland neighborhood. For now they are open four days a week beginning at 7am. They are closed Wednesday and Thursdays.

*Meanwhile, not quite a mile or so down the road, Goody’s, the new breakfast and lunch concept brought to you by Bull Street Taco appears to be on final approach at Bull at 32nd Street. Signage is up. Looks like furniture is falling into place.

*If you haven’t noticed, the very popular Geneva’s Fried Chicken on Skidaway Road has been closed for a couple of months for an expansion project they are working on. We’d been told they had hoped to be open by now, but these things always take longer than anyone expects them to. So for now, they remain closed.

*Eating and Liking: If you have not tried it yet, the burger at Brochu's Family Tradition is a contender for best in Savannah in our book. Absolutely outstanding every single time.
