Tetradin, etc... (D‘N’B )
For years now, proponents of Drum & Bass industrial dance music (or Jungle, as it’s sometimes known) have lamented the lack of anything close to approaching a full-time, viable scene for such a genre in Savannah. Despite a few valiant attempts over the past decade and a half to jumpstart a following for D‘N’B, it’s never caught on in a big way, which is strange, considering how many DJs that specialize in it and fans who dig listening and dancing to it pass through our city courtesy of SCAD enrollment and the ports (D‘N’B is huge internationally).
Regardless, one local proponent has organized this event, featuring Tetradin, a relentless, pounding “neurofunk” trio from Charlotte that formed in 2003 and has pressed wax on the well-known Renegade Hardware imprint. Their live gigs are known for a nonstop mix of original tracks and mixes from other cutting-edge artists. Also on this massive bill are Nashville’s Hunter, and Columbia, S.C.’s GuyL, plus local DJs Culprit, Lunatek and Symbiotek. The organizer says that with enough of a turnout for this event, they may attempt to host regular D‘N’B nights at this venue, so, by all means — if you dig it, show up. Rocket 88
One of the finer rockabilly bands in the land, these guys have been at it since 1992! They’ve gigged with major artists in a variety of related genres, such as The Cramps, Dick Dale, Royal Crown Revue, Big Bad Voodoo Daddy and Southern Culture On The Skids. However, all you need to know about these piano-wailing flat-top cats and dungaree dogs is that after witnessing their opening set, none other than Jerry Lee Lewis himself called them “the best band I’ve seen in years.” Hey, when The Killer gives you the thumb’s up, you’re doin’ something right... The Sound of Music: Regional Band Artwork Show
All props to this tattoo studio and fringe art gallery for curating one of the first-ever shows of artwork related to our local music scene. Photographs, original flyers, album and single covers, etc... They’re all on display, from artists and acts such as Geoff Johnson, Black Tusk, DAMAD, Superhorse, Ricky McGee and more. Mash It Up: A Benefit For A Cure, featuring DJ KZL
and Hot Pink Interior
The brainchild of drummer and cancer survivor Robyn Reeder and local bartender Gil Cruz, this benefit concert/dance party finds Reeder’s punky power-pop band Hot Pink Interior playing a headline set bookended by local music scene icon Keith Kozel (GAM, The Hall Monitor), under his DJ KZL handle, spinning an eclectic mix of retro rock and Britpop. Additionally, gift certificates and services donated by local businesses will be raffled off, with all proceeds and door charges donated to Breast Cancer Research. Female-fronted HPI features members of such well-known Savannah rock acts as Superhorse and Splitfinger. Their originals bear the unmistakable influence of angsty, melodic artists such as Sleater-Kinney, Liz Phair and The Runaways. Their set begins between 10:30 and 11 pm. $5 admission includes a raffle ticket, with extra tickets available for $1 each. Mon., 9:30 pm, The Jinx.
Ken Will Morton
The last time Athens-based singer/songwriter Ken Will Morton played a solo acoustic show at the Bean, hardly anyone showed up — but those who did caught a short, sweet set of taut, edgy Americana tunes that showcased a burgeoning talent with boatloads of potential for growth. Now he’s back for another low-key gig at this coffeehouse and performance space, but in the intervening months, he’s put together an impressively solid and hard-rocking backup band (The Wholly Ghosts) featuring some of the finer roots-rockers in that fabled alternative music mecca. His newer material is drawing all sorts of praise from jaded critics and open-minded crowds alike, as well as comparisons to middle-period Replacements and post-rehab Steve Earle. Rumor has it he’ll be bringing his full, electric show through town soon, but this is a fine opportunity to catch him up close with just a guitar. Award-winning New England songwriter and guitarist Meika Pauley (a favorite of this venue) rounds out the bill with a set of heartfelt, personal laments and ballads.
