JIM AVETT, father of Scott and Seth of The Avett Brothers, joins City Hotel at The Bean on Friday. A lifetime hobbyist, Avett spent most of his years focusing on raising his children and his welding career. After retiring, he returned to the guitar and began pursuing music, hitting the road to share his original work and recording three albums. Currently, he's working on a fourth record, featuring sons Seth, Scott, and daughter Bonnie.

Avett has a gentle, summery ease to his songs, a kind of comforting strum to the guitar and an honest, genial voice. Maybe it’s the context, but much of his writing sweetly comes across as a front-porch sitting father sharing advice with his children: “The game is on, you gotta play the hand you got.”
