FURY IN FEW + KLEPT + HEAVEN MOTO @ EL ROCKO
SAT MAR 30 | 8 PM
It’s probably not hyperbole to say Atlanta’s heavy rock duo can be called the current generation’s Local H. They get a lot done with the leanest setup and swerve hard into a pile styles. Think heavier alt-rock with pleasant surprises and better influences. Early 90s originators Rage Against the Machine are to be expected, but UK alt-metal act Fudge Tunnel and LA alt-grungers Sugartooth aren’t. The groove runs through early chugga-chug thrash, hardcore and anthemic punk, and possibly a nibble of New Wave of British Heavy Metal. Some bands just know how to bomb away on a great riff and turn it into moshpit fuel. Klept turns music into “noisy art rock” with live human experiments on the audience to find Mr Bungle and genre head-fake fans. Jacksonville’s Heaven Moto is punk af, which is not easy for a newer band.

CLEMENTINE WAS RIGHT @ THE SLAB
TUES MAR 26 | 6 PM
Poets Mike Young and Gion Davis published three acclaimed books in the 2010s before they started the songwriting project Clementine Was Right in 2018. Now based in Denver, the collaborative albums cross a continent of Americana, country, folk and endless variations of the sound. They’ve called it bootgaze and western emo, and the mission is “complicating and queering the lineage of ‘country music’ with yokel fuzz.” Their 2020 album “Lightning & Regret” covers seventh-grade boys wearing black lipstick, extra potatoes, and it asks the darkly comic question we all do: “Why Can’t the Mall Burn Down?” 2022’s “Can’t Get Right With Darkness” was recorded live on a 1969 Ampex tape machine and sounds like you’re in the room. All of them are packed, no filler.

INTO THE FOG @ CONGRESS STREET SOCIAL CLUB
SAT MAR 30 | 3 PM
Duck Season! Wabbit Season! Matinee Season! BOOM!!! Raleigh’s “psychedelic jamgrass from Appalachia” quartet stops way downtown for a mid-day set or two. It’s traditional, old-school bluegrass and country buoyed by strong harmonies and Southern soul. Some live performances get full drum kits involved for rock and funk. Electric or acoustic, your long, strange trip into their fog is soundtracked by extended jams that give lead guitarist Connnor Kozlosky plenty of room to stretch out. He uses it generously to great effect, summoning all the bombast required by a bluegrass guitarist channeling Jerry, going hard for Jimi and Jimmy, and catching up with Yngwie.

CODY MARLOWE @ OVER YONDER
SAT MAR 30 | 3 PM
The roots rock singer-songwriter grew up surrounded by the best influences and teachers. His artist trinity is BB King, Merle Haggard and The Allman Bros. He was taught piano by his great-aunt and mother, guitar by his grandpa and uncle, and how to sing by his grandma, aunt, mother and sister Kate, who sings with him in concert. The return on investment from all this music and effort is evident in Marlowe’s songs. They are well-crafted and very emotional, with mood and texture, telling tales of good and evil, love lost and ever-present hope. Marlow has been repping the tiny town of Claremont, Ga., for more than 15 years. Kill an afternoon finding out how.

SEAN PATTON @ THE WORMHOLE
SAT MAR 30 | 8 PM
The NYC-based comic is from New Orleans, so he likes to play in the South often. His set is made up mainly of stories covering any topic you can think of. The relationship material is brutal, funny, and brutally funny, with hearts ripped out to be never seen again, possibly used for something unmentionable. He’ll lean into NOLA quirks, a city with plenty, for some laughs, as well as the everyday mundane crap we do, which is harder to formulate into humor. But Patton’s a pro, so he’s got it. He’s also got a special streaming on Peacock network and his three albums are available on the Spotify/Pandora/iTunes hydra. He’s got a ridiculously long list of comedy festival appearances, four SXSW stops and has been on the Fallon and Conan late nights shows.
