Tybee Island is getting ready to host its annual New Year tradition, the Tybee Polar Plunge. On New Year’s Day, thousands of visitors and locals alike flock to the island’s South Beach to plunge into the Atlantic Ocean at noon. It’s an exciting and memorable way to start off the year, and it’s great fun for the whole family.

Prior to the plunge, there will be a Gang of Goofs costume contest and parade at 11 a.m. at Tybee’s pier. Teams of three or more will don their wackiest, zaniest, most creative costumes and compete for cash prizes and the coveted Le Gang of Goofs trophy. There will be first, second and third place winners. A panel of esteemed judges will decide on the winning teams, and the winners will be announced before the Polar Plunge begins.

Registration is required to participate in the contest and includes the 2023 Tybee Polar Plunge long-sleeve t-shirt. Those interested in participating can register online or in person on the day of the event before 10:30 a.m. All proceeds will benefit the Tybee Post Theater and Tybee Island Main Street.
