University of Georgia (UGA) Bulldog fans received tough news on Tuesday morning when the school announced the passing of former mascot Uga X. Fondly known as Que, the statement from UGA said the bulldog died peacefully in his sleep at his home in Savannah, where he was raised by Charles Seiler and the Seiler family.
"We are saddened to announce that Uga X, fondly known as Que, died peacefully in his sleep earlier this morning,"
read the school's statement.
"Born May 27, 2013, he formally began his tenure in a collaring ceremony at the Georgia-Georgia Southern football game on Nov. 21, 2015. Que retired following the 2022 season after becoming the most decorated of all the Bulldog mascots. He compiled a record of 91-18, presided over two SEC titles, the 2021 and 2022 College Football Playoff National Championships, and seven New Year’s Six bowl appearances. He will always be remembered as a Damn Good Dawg."
On X (Twitter) Tuesday, the hashtag "RIP Que" was trending following the university's announcement. Uga XI, known as "Boom," took over for Que in a "collaring ceremony" held prior to the G-Day football spring game in April of 2023.
The Uga line of mascots began in 1956 under the ownership of Frank and Cecelia Seiler in Savannah. Since then, the Seiler family, led by Charles Seiler, has continued its loyal dedication to the mascots for nearly 70 years while living primarily in Savannah.
For those wondering what characteristics might define Boom, perhaps he might be a late riser compared to Que.
"Things will be a little different around the house for a while," said Charles Seiler through the school's statement. "Que traditionally started barking for his breakfast around 5:30am. This morning, Boom waited until 6am to let us know he was ready for his breakfast. So, he'll be a little later each day."
