Savannah African Art Museum collaborates with community agencies on summer initiatives

This summer, the Savannah African Art Museum is collaborating with local organizations like Massie Heritage Center, African American Health Information Resource Center, and more to

provide individuals of all ages with opportunities to interact with African art and culture this summer. Through the community-oriented initiatives, the museum’s team hopes to tie in African art and culture education with the unique offerings and experiences provided by these organizations.

Campers from Massie Heritage Center’s Color Me Happy art camp and the African American Health Information Resource Center incorporated the Savannah African Art Museum into their programs and toured the West African section with a special emphasis on two pieces of art. They received informational coloring sheets on these two pieces as a takeaway from the museum.

Middle school-aged students attending a summer camp with the Savannah African Art Museum’s 37 th Street neighbor, Scribbles Art Studio, will have the chance to make weekly visits to the museum while creating two and three-dimensional art media inspired by the museum’s "Between Two Worlds” exhibit. Seats are still available for this opportunity. The Gullah Geechee Futures Project brought summer interns from Morehouse College - Mellon Movement, Memory & Justice Project for a West African tour with emphasis on the Igbo

People of Nigeria. Later in the summer, two senior groups from the Pennsylvania Avenue Resource Center will visit for a West African tour. Horizons Savannah youths will also visit for a West African tour, bringing their bag lunch for a post tour discussion in the museum’s garden.

“It is a joy and an honor to partner with these community organizations to reach multiple generations through our exhibits,” said Lisa Jackson, the museum’s education and community outreach liaison. “The Savannah African Art Museum will work to facilitate age-appropriate and engaging experiences for children and people of all ages to explore the vastness of African art and culture. It is our goal to establish ties and build relationships with other community entities, and we hope to build more partnerships!”

Historic Savannah Foundation sets date for 2023 annual gala

Historic Savannah Foundation is encouraging Savannahians to save the date of Saturday, Oct. 21, 2023, for one of the most anticipated cultural events on Savannah’s calendar – the Historic Savannah Foundation Annual Gala.

The Gala, the largest fundraising event for Savannah’s principal preservation organization, will be held at Kehoe Iron Works at Trustees Garden on the evening of Oct. 21. A reception will open the night’s festivities at 6:00 p.m., with dinner and dancing at 7 p.m. Music for the black-tie event will be provided by the Emerald Empire Band.

“Year in and year out, HSF demonstrates the economic, cultural, and social benefits of preservation as smart public policy,” said Sue Adler, president and CEO. “Preservation is what makes Savannah different from any other city in America. The HSF Annual Gala celebrates the perseverance, community investment, and what we work to save every day – the buildings, places, and stories that define Savannah’s past, present, and future. As our largest fundraiser, the HSF Annual Gala’s success is critical to keeping Savannah the culturally rich and historically meaningful place that is so important to so many.”

Adler says the Gala is a HSF member benefit and invitations will be mailed exclusively to members in September. The organization is encouraging those who wish to support HSF and receive a Gala invitation to become members or renew memberships by August 7. Details on the formal event and how to purchase tickets can be found online at myhsf.org/events/gala/
